Caring for a Female Puppy in Heat

At Van Dalen Labradors, I recommend waiting until a female is at least 18 months old before spaying, unless there is a true medical reason that requires an earlier spay.
For a healthy young female, I do not recommend spaying before 18 months of age. Hormones play an important role in normal growth and development. Waiting allows the female to mature more fully, which may be beneficial for joint health, long-term structure, metabolism, and overall development.
The main medical reason that may require an earlier spay would be a serious uterine problem such as pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus. Pyometra is very rare in a young female, so this is not something to be afraid of, but it is one of the reasons we do not want to delay spaying unnecessarily once a female is mature and has finished her heat cycle.
